"Small Enough"

My good friend, Andrea, made a CD for a me a while back. A mix CD of praise songs and such that she likes. I let the CD sit around on my desk for months without listening to it. When I finally popped it in, I was sorry I hadn't done it the minute she gave it to me. It was on repeat in my CD player (yes, I still use the CD player in my car) for at least a month.

It is a fantastic CD.

In fact, it's now Layla's favorite CD, and she listens to it before she goes to bed every night.

Her favorite, and mine, is a song by Nichole Nordeman called, "Small Enough".

It is one of those songs that just resonates with my soul. Especially if I'm feeling sad, lonely, down, hurt, angry, confused, or _______ (fill in any emotion that's not so lovely).

One thing I dearly love about the song is that it references old testament scripture so many times. I'm kind of a dork, and I just love it when I come across a passage in the Bible and realize it was the inspiration for a praise song I've been singing.

Check out the lyrics to "Small Enough", and you'll see what I mean.

oh, great god, be small enough to hear me now
there were times when i was crying
from the dark of daniel's den
and i have asked you once or twice
if you would part the sea again
but tonight i do not need a fiery pillar in the sky
just wanna know you're gonna hold me if i start to cry
oh, great god, be small enough to hear me now

oh, great god, be close enough to feel you now
there have been moments when i could not face goliath on my own
and how could i forget we've marched around our share of jerichos
but i will not be setting out a fleece for you tonight
just wanna know that everything will be alright
oh great god, be close enough to feel you now

all praise and all the honor be
to the god of ancient mysteries
whose every sign and wonder
turn the pages of our history
but tonight my heart is heavy
and i cannot keep from whispering this prayer
"are you there?"
and i know you could leave writing on the wall that's just for me
or send wisdom while i'm sleeping, like in soloman's sweet dreams
but i don't need the strength of samson
or a chariot in the end
just want to know that you still know how many hairs are on my head

oh great god, be small enough to hear me now

Did you notice all the OT scripture references? I love how she uses those OT stories to relate to our lives today...to put into perspective that our struggles aren't all that different from the stories in the Bible. I also love how she references those stories to remind us of God's faithfulness.

I searched for a video of this song, but I couldn't find anything official. Here's a slideshow someone put to the music. It's not exactly what I would choose, but it's pretty good. At the very least, you can at least hear how beautiful the song is. By the way, the song is on Nichole's CD "This Mystery", which was released in 2000.

I hope you like the song as much as Layla and I do.
