Y'all. Can I just tell you how disappointed I am?
So the other day, I noticed that my peony plant was going to bloom this year. This plant has not bloomed since it was planted 4 or 5 years ago. I have watched it every spring. The plant itself comes up, the leaves are nice, but no peony. The only reason I know it's a peony is because the gardener who planted it for me several years ago told me she had planted one. She knew peonies were my favorite. My very favorite.
You can imagine, then, that when I saw a bud a week or so ago that I was super excited. I thought, I'll take a picture of it every day, post it on the blog as it opens, and then show the beautiful flower that emerges. Peonies are one of the most beautiful flowers, after all.
I even told the girls that they were my peony protectors. I wanted them to feel a sense of ownership, just in case they got the urge to pull the single bud off the plant. Or if they saw Charlie, who likes to chew plants, go near it. They were to protect the peony. Pretty smart, right?
I admit that I didn't wind up taking pictures of it every day. Thought about it every day, if that counts. But didn't do it.
This morning I noticed that the peony was blooming. I was debating all morning about whether to pick it and put it in a vase, or just enjoy it out there in the flower bed. I knew for sure that whatever choice I made, I would take a picture of it to show you how beautiful it was. I mean, I have been waiting for it to bloom for YEARS.
So, Layla is down for her nap. Elizabeth is watching tv quietly on the couch. This is the perfect moment to take a picture of the peony and post it to the blog. I walk outside, and this is what I see...
Whaaaat?? Disappointed doesn't even describe it.
On the upside, I didn't have to decide whether to pick the peony. It was either leave it laying there. On the ground. (No way.) Or bring it inside and put it in a vase. What vase could possibly be worthy of such a highly anticipated bloom? Well, as it turns out, it's a fairly small bloom, and I don't have many small vases, so that became a relatively easy decision as well.
Looks like I'll be enjoying this peony for as long as it will stay beautiful in this nice little white vase.
Not bad. Not bad. I'll definitely be soaking it up for the next several days. Here's to hoping that my peony will bloom again next year. And may the culprit who broke the bloom off today feel very sorry for what they did. (I'm guessing it was a furry white culprit who doesn't feel sorry for anything he does. Should have named him Rascal. Or PITA.)
