Mother's Day

I love Mother's Day.  With each year that passes, I think I love it even more.  It might just be my favorite holiday.

Elizabeth's K3 class held a Mother's Day tea this week.  I was so excited as the day approached.  I just knew her teacher had put a lot into it, and Elizabeth seemed excited about the surprises that were in store for me.  She has a hard time keeping secrets, but she did a good job.  She only hinted that a flower would be involved.

The moms were sent to the tea early, and the kids stayed back in the classroom to "get ready".  When we got to the room, there was a place set for each mom.  There were several little gifts and a potted pansy waiting for me.  When the kids arrived, they were so cute!  They were dressed up as little old ladies and old men.  I of course forgot my camera, but here are a couple of low quality photos that I took with my camera phone.  Layla even got to dress up with the class!

I didn't take pictures of the gifts, but here's a picture of Elizabeth that was in a frame.

Wow, right?

Bless her heart.  We try to work on her smile.  Sometimes she gets it just right.  Other times, when you ask her to smile, you get what you see above.  Grr.  The best way to get her to smile is to tell her to laugh, but then you get some goofy pictures too where her mouth is wide open with a huge laugh.  Her sweet teacher said she took six pictures, and she never could get her to give a pretty smile.  Little rascal.

It was a treat to have breakfast with Elizabeth.  I pour my heart and soul into being a mother, often giving more than I think I have to give, and it feels wonderful to be appreciated on Mother's Day.  To all those people who say Mother's Day is over-commercialized, or we should celebrate mothers every day, or it's an insult to pick one day of the year to honor mothers: I say insult shminsult.  If you really do honor your mother/wife every day, then keep on talking, but I suspect that your mother and/or the mother of your children deserves to be honored, because you probably don't do a great job of honoring her every day.  I'm just sayin'.

I have several friends who are celebrating their first Mother's Day this year, and to all of you, I want to say I love you, and you are doing a great job.  It has been said before, but it's fair to say it again.  Being a mother is the hardest job you will ever have, but it's also the most rewarding job you will ever have.  Lanie Beth, Hannah, Karen, Katie, Maribeth, Andrea: It is a privilege to be on this journey of motherhood with you, and I am so proud of each of you.  You all amaze me, and you deserve to be told you are loved and appreciated, and you are doing a great job.  You are a great mother.

I read an old Jewish proverb today that says "God couldn't be everywhere, so He created mothers."  I love that.

Happy Mother's Day, friends.  If you are a mother, I hope you feel adored this Mother's Day.  If you have a mother, or someone who is like a mother to you, I hope you will go out of your way to tell her how much she means to you.  She deserves to hear it.  I don't think she will be insulted that you chose to honor her on Mother's Day.  =)
